CASTOR OIL
BOTANICAL NAME: Ricinus communis
WHAT IS IT
The Castor bean plant originates from Eastern Africa and India where it has been cultivated for millennia. It is a perennial shrub and grows to about 10m in tropical and sub-tropical climates - (but much shorter in temperate climates).
Castor oil is a shiny viscous pale yellow oil obtained by pressing the seeds (not the beans as the Castor bean plant is not actually a member of the bean family).
WHERE DO WE GET IT FROM
Our Castor oil comes from India and is certified Organic by the Soil Association.
WHY IS IT SO GOOD
A lot of castor oils beneficial properties can be attributed to ricinoleic acid, the omega-9 fatty acid that makes up about 90% of the oil. Ricinoleic acid has extremely potent anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties which helps to protect the skin against invading invading viruses and bacteria as well as calming and soothing sensitive, red and irritated skin. Castor oil is low on the comedogenic scale, so it won’t clog the pores or annoy a sensitive skin.
Castor oil also works as a natural humectant, pulling moisture from the air and trapping it close to the skins tissues providing long-lasting hydration to both skin (and hair).
Also extremely beneficial to the hair, the properties of ricinoleic acid along with vitamin E, and minerals in Castor oil has a strengthening effect on hair follicles, hydrates dry and damaged hair and can help reduce split ends.
